Lesson 3
How to Execute the Backhand Drive
For beginners and novice players, executing the backhand drive stroke should be approached with a deliberate pace, focusing on achieving consistency and accuracy in ball placement on the partner’s side of the table.
It's crucial for players to maintain a consistent grip throughout play. Holding the bat vertically in front of you, ensure that a straight line drawn from the edge of the bat aligns with your forearm. Adjust your grip accordingly if needed.
When practicing this stroke, it's recommended to play from the left side of your table diagonally to your partner's side.
Consider the following points for proper execution:
- Position yourself squarely facing your partner with your feet pointing towards them.
- Maintain a balanced stance by positioning your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, with your left foot slightly closer to the table.
- Keep your left arm parallel to your playing arm at all times, aiding in the recognition of the ball's direction.
- Maintain a closed bat angle and aim to strike the upper part of the ball.
- Execute the stroke when the ball is positioned relatively in front of you, avoiding striking from the left side of your body.
- Ensure your shoulder line is perpendicular to the incoming ball.
- Maintain a 90-degree angle at the elbow of your playing arm throughout the stroke.
- Use a forearm movement, not the upper arm, to execute the stroke.
- After striking the ball, follow through by going over it and pressing it down to prevent it from going out.
- Your bat should follow the ball's trajectory, pointing towards where it will land, without overextending forward.
- Time your strike when the ball reaches its peak bounce or slightly higher than the net height.
- Novice players should avoid allowing the ball to go out of the table before attempting to strike it.
- Maintain a bent leg position and bring your head closer to the ball when striking to gauge its height and adjust the bat angle accordingly.
- Track the ball from your partner's bat to your own, enabling you to assess its direction, speed, spin, and adjust your bat angle accordingly.
- Ensure your bat and arm remain low, pointing in the direction of the outgoing ball.
- Maintain a cooperative approach with your partner, focusing on medium-speed shots with precise placement to facilitate effective play without excessive movement.
Consistency and accuracy are paramount in mastering this stroke efficiently and with proper technique.
